Film Nova Scotia Continues Support of Student Filmmakers

Film Nova Scotia (Nov. 2007 - Nov. 2012)

Film Nova Scotia is supporting NSCAD and its students by sponsoring thesis grants in the bachelor of fine arts film program.

Each fall, fourth-year student directors pitch thesis film concepts to a jury of faculty and external professionals. From the pitches, five thesis films are awarded grants for a seven-month production. Pre-production and development begin in September, shooting begins in January and the final product is delivered at the end of March.

"The NSCAD film program attracts the most talented youth aspiring to build careers in visual and media arts," said Sam Fisher, NSCAD associate professor of Media Arts. "Film Nova Scotia's contribution to the program is helping to provide students with real hands-on experience."

This year, the following five students each received the $2,500 Film Nova Scotia thesis grant:

  • Caleigh Childs, Berwick: The Lone Tree
  • Christian MacDonald, Sydney: When You're Gone
  • Justin Tomchuk, Hubley: No One's Watching
  • Kirsten Stanley, Rothesay, N.B.: Fuddle
  • Karolina Szablewska, Lindsay, Ont.: Crossing Over

Film Nova Scotia has supported the program since 2008 for its ability to successfully train students to enter the film and television industry.

"Ensuring the strength and stability of the industry is a key priority for us," said Ann MacKenzie, president and CEO of Film Nova Scotia. "We are proud to be a part of a program that directly benefits students who are the future of the Nova Scotia film industry."

Film Nova Scotia is a provincial Crown corporation reporting to the Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. The corporation provides a wide range of programs and services to support the province's audiovisual industry. Nova Scotia is among the largest production centres in Canada.
