Crown Attorney Appointed in Port Hawkesbury

Cheryl Schurman has been appointed a Crown attorney in the Port Hawkesbury office of the Public Prosecution Service.

The appointment was announced today, April 4, by Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions.

"Ms. Schurman's experience in criminal prosecutions will be an asset to the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service, said Mr. Herschorn. "We are pleased to have her join our team."

A native of Kensington, Prince Edward Island, Ms. Schurman graduated in 2002 from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction. In 2005, she graduated on the Dean's List from the University of New Brunswick Law School.

Ms. Schurman articled with McInnes Cooper in Charlottetown and was admitted to the bar of Prince Edward Island in 2006. Later in 2006, she was appointed a Crown Prosecutor in Edmonton, Alberta conducting prosecutions on a variety of Criminal Code offences at both the provincial and Queen's Bench levels.

Two years later, Ms. Schurman returned to Prince Edward Island and joined the firm of Stewart McKelvey where she focused on litigation including criminal defence work and prosecutions as an agent for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. In 2010 Ms. Schurman was appointed a Crown Attorney for the Prince Edward Island Department of Justice.

Ms. Schurman won a host of academic prizes and scholarships while in university. She is a member of the Law Societies of Prince Edward island and Nova Scotia. She has been a member of the Prince Edward Island Victim Services Committee and has coached girls' hockey.
