Halifax Welcomes Women in Non-traditional Careers Delegates

Labour and Advanced Education (Jan. 2011 - Aug. 2021)

Nova Scotia is hosting a national conference that aims to increase the number of women working in science, engineering, trades and technology.

Marilyn More, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, and Nan Armour, president of the Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology, are welcoming about 300 participants from across the country to Halifax, today, May 3.

"We are facing waves of opportunity in our province and we need to ensure we have the skilled workforce needed to fill these roles," said Ms. More. "Increasing the participation of women in science, engineering, trades and technology is a goal of Labour and Advanced Education, the Status of Women and our JobsHere plan."

"Inspiring a SeaChange … Moving Forward Together is a perfect theme for the conference," said Ms. Armour. "There's no better time to look at why women are underrepresented in these careers and secure the partnerships and pathways necessary to fill the void we see in these sectors."

This is the first time the province has hosted the biennial conference, which runs through Saturday.

Ministers responsible for the Status of Women from across Canada have just concluded their national meeting to connect with the Halifax conference.

"The partnerships we build at this conference will open the doors necessary for the sea change to happen," said Ms. More.
