Provincial Parks Opening This Weekend

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians are being encouraged to discover our province's natural beauty by visiting a provincial park this season.

Some provincial camping parks and day-use parks, including beach parks and trails, will open for the season today, May 18.

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park will open for camping and day visitors, however the Eatonville day-use area will not open until June 22.

"Our province is home to many beautiful parks that provide Nova Scotians with an easy and affordable way to experience nature," said Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker. "I highly recommend getting out and spending quality time with family and friends at our provincial parks this season."

In addition to camping and hiking opportunities the Nova Scotia Provincial Parks system offers a variety of nature-based events to campers and visitors. The events are listed in the Park Events Guide. It features educational opportunities and outdoor adventures that are offered as a co-operative effort by government agencies, recreation associations, interested volunteers and community organizations.

A number of events scheduled for this weekend include:

  • a guided bird watching hike at Graves Island Provincial Park in East Chester, on Saturday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m.
  • an interpretive walk at Blomidon Provincial Park in Canning, on Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m.
  • a butterfly garden party at Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park in Shubenacadie, Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m.
  • Come Walk Our Park, a day of nature walks, wildlife displays, family events and children's games at Mira River Provincial Park in Albert Bridge, Cape Breton, on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m.

Most events are free with some others requiring advance registration.

The Park Events Guide is available at Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centres and at Nova Scotia Provincial Parks. Nova Scotians are also encouraged to pick up a copy of the Camper Guide 2012-2013 for information on camping and day-use parks. The Camper Guide is also available at Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centres and at Nova Scotia Provincial Parks.
