Forest Fire Caution for May Long Weekend

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians are urged to take extra caution with open fires during Victoria Day weekend.

"We are expecting nice weather this long weekend and I encourage Nova Scotians to get out into nature and safely enjoy what our province has to offer," said Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker. "We ask that people who have burning permits, are camping or are enjoying outdoor activities to watch the weather and keep safety in mind."

The department's forest protection division cautions there could be a higher risk for forest fires across the province over the weekend, as warm and dry weather is forecasted. Recent rainfall was not evenly distributed across the province so fire hazard still exists in some areas.

Environment Canada predicts an average temperature but below average rainfall for the remainder of the season for Nova Scotia. There have already been 210 forest fires reported by district staff across the province this season, excluding grassfires.

Residents are asked to make sure all open fires, campfires and cigarettes are properly extinguished. They should also take precautions when burning campfires and make sure they are away from flammable vegetation.

Nova Scotians are reminded that burning permits are required to light a fire in or within 1000 feet (304 metres) of the woods in Nova Scotia during the fire season. Some municipalities require additional permissions and permits.
