Amendments to HRM Charter Support Communities

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Skaters on the Halifax Common will have access to permanent public washrooms in a new building that will also house maintenance equipment for the Emera Skating Oval.

Legislation introduced today, Nov. 29, by John MacDonell, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister, will amend the Halifax Municipal Charter to allow HRM to construct the building on the North Common.

"Nova Scotians want strong, vibrant communities that offer the services and amenities that they need," said Mr. MacDonell. "These changes support this and ensure that HRM has the appropriate legislative framework and tools in place to better serve its citizens."

About 130,000 skaters used the Oval last winter. Skaters have had temporary washrooms and maintenance equipment has been stored in temporary structures.

HRM requested the amendment and will conduct public consultation on the building design.

Halifax Regional Municipality was granted its own charter in 2009 to better respond to its unique needs as the largest municipality in Nova Scotia.
