Nova Scotia Drivers to Benefit from Registry System Upgrade

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Nova Scotia drivers will benefit from an updated Registry of Motor Vehicles computer system that makes it easier to add online services and reduces service disruptions during system outages.

"The Registry of Motor Vehicles system is of critical importance to Nova Scotians," said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This upgrade will ensure the system can respond to future requirements while making sure it is available when Nova Scotia drivers and law enforcement officers need it."

The upgrade includes the purchase of new servers. Presently, there is only one server which means that a two-minute interruption in service can result in a much longer wait for customers in Registry of Motor Vehicles and Access Nova Scotia locations. The work will begin in July and is expected to be completed by 2015. The work will be done by information technology staff at Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations at an estimated cost of $1.7 million.

About 80,000 Registry of Motor Vehicle customers are served each month.

This project is part of the province's capital plan. This is the third year in a row that the province has released information on the capital plan before the spring budget.
