Havre Boucher Opens New Waste Water Treatment Facility

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

People in the Havre Boucher area will benefit from expanded and improved management of waste water for their community.

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Maurice Smith, on behalf of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister John MacDonell, MP Peter MacKay, and Antigonish County Warden Russell Boucher, officially opened the facility today, Dec. 2.

Almost 200 households will have their waste water treated at the upgraded facility. The project included the design and construction of a replacement facility and expansion of the collection system.

"Investments in infrastructure projects like this one for the Havre Boucher area, and the partnership of the different levels of government, will help reduce our impact on the environment while making life better for the residents and the community," said Mr. Smith. "The construction of this facility has helped create good jobs and grow the economy."

The province, government of Canada and the Municipality of the County Antigonish each contributed $1,342,681 to help build the facility through the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component. The total cost of the project was $4,028,044.

Mr. Boucher said the Municipality of the County of Antigonish is proud of the completion of the Havre Boucher Waste Water Treatment Facility, which engaged members of the Havre Boucher community through consultations on design and development.

"This is an example of our commitment to sustainability and to service provision," said Mr. Boucher. "This was made possible by the cooperation and through funding from all three levels of government. This facility supports growth in our county and is just another of the many reasons to live here."

The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund helps fund infrastructure projects in communities with populations of less than 100,000 (as of the 2006 Census). The Communities Component significantly helps smaller communities address individual infrastructure pressures and priorities.
