Health and Wellness

Residents of Pictou County have a new state-of-the-art facility providing access to high-quality sport, health and wellness, business, education and social opportunities to their community.

The Pictou County Wellness Centre celebrated its grand opening today, Dec. 6, in New Glasgow.

"Our federal government has been a proud partner throughout the process of creating and building Pictou County's new wellness centre and is proud to ensure people in our region get to enjoy a state-of-the-art facility for recreational, sporting and social activities," said Minister of National Defence Peter Mackay. "This project has energized our entire region and I look forward to many gatherings, meetings and sporting events at this incredible facility."

Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson, joined representatives of the municipal government and community members at the grand opening ceremony.

"Promoting healthy, active lifestyles and community involvement is a priority for our government," said Mr. Parker. "Facilities like the Pictou County Wellness Centre will help get people moving and create vibrant communities across Nova Scotia."

The new centre includes: a six-lane, 25-metre pool; a warm water pool for therapeutic and adapted programs and recreational activities; an arena with two full-sized ice surfaces; a dedicated fitness centre; multi-purpose community and conference space; an indoor walking track; and a regulation-size gymnasium.

The province, through the Departments of Health and Wellness and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, committed $11-million toward the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The government of Canada provided $11-million, and the centre was responsible for the remaining project costs.

"The addition of the Pictou County Wellness Centre to our community has greatly enhanced our ability to provide healthy lifestyle options and has added a core piece to our complement of quality recreational assets," said Warden Ron Baillie. "It will also provide opportunities for economic development and tourism as well as creating a central community gathering place."

Canada and Nova Scotia are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities prosper.
