Renewed Agreement Benefits Communities, Environment
Nova Scotians will continue to have a solid-waste reduction program recognized globally for its innovation, with a new agreement between the province and the Resource Recovery Fund Board Inc.
The five-year agreement will ensure continued funding for municipalities to help with the cost of waste management services, while protecting solid waste programs, projects and research support throughout the province. There is an option to renew the agreement for another five years.
"The province's partnership with RRFB Nova Scotia is a success story that has positioned the province as a leader in solid-waste programs," said Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau. "We look forward to continuing this relationship to further reduce our solid waste and protect the environment for all Nova Scotians."
Created in 1996, RRFB Nova Scotia has generated about $110-million in funding for municipal waste-management programs and invested millions of dollars in provincial and municipal programs.
"RRFB Nova Scotia is pleased to renew the agreement with the province," said CEO Jeff MacCallum. "We've made great strides in the last 16 years, and with this new agreement, we will continue to work with our provincial, municipal and industry partners to further develop and invest in innovative systems and programs to divert solid waste from Nova Scotia landfills."
RRFB Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit corporation working with Nova Scotians to improve the province's environment, economy and quality of life by reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering resources. It manages a network of more than 80 independently owned Enviro-Depots. It also delivers education and awareness programs, stewardship agreements, and promotes innovation through value-added manufacturing.
RRFB Nova Scotia is funded by the beverage container deposit program, recyclable materials sale and managing other recycling programs.
