Province Making Roads Safer in Cape Breton

The province is working with the public to make roads safer for drivers and residents in the Kytes Hill Drive area just outside Sydney.

The province recently hired a consultant to review the area, including the intersection at Kytes Hill Drive and Grand Lake Road, to address safety concerns from residents.

"Road safety is always our first priority," said Maurice Smith, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "My department is working with a consultant and other stakeholders to determine how we could enhance public safety on this busy section of road."

The consultant, Hatch Mott MacDonald, will work with a steering committee of representatives from CBRM, police, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. A public meeting will allow residents to provide input.

"The public meeting is a great opportunity for the many motorists in our area who travel Grand Lake Road," said Peter McIsaac, Cape Breton Regional Police Chief. "I know many will look forward to discussing the issues and possible solutions for a safe roadway."

The meeting will take place Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department, 866 Grand Lake Rd., Sydney.

The $30,000 review, funded by the province, is expected to be complete by August.
