Province Supports CBRM's Capital Plan

The people of Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) will continue to live, work and raise a family in a strong, vibrant community with the commitment by the province to support the municipality's five-year capital plan.

John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, expressed the province's support to CBRM in a letter sent to Mayor Cecil Clarke today, April 23.

"I'm encouraged to see that CBRM is being proactive about improving its infrastructure and promoting economic growth for the region," said Mr. MacDonell. "The government has made record infrastructure investments over the past three years, creating thousands of jobs and maximizing every dollar the federal government invested in Nova Scotia infrastructure."

The province will work with the municipality to seek the federal government's support for the capital plan and commit 25 cents for every 50 cents provided by the federal government. CBRM's five-year capital plan has identified a number of initiatives, including the requirement to meet new federal wastewater regulations.

"These federal requirements are creating a significant financial pressure for the region and the capital plan provides a positive move forward to address that issue," said Mr. MacDonell.

The province recognizes the important role good infrastructure plays in building vibrant communities and encouraging business growth, economic development and job creation.
