Canadians Asked to Vote for Park's New Name

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Canadians can vote for the name of the new park being built on the cleaned up Sydney tar ponds site.

The Sydney Park Project campaign was launched in March. Students were invited to submit a name for the park and explain why they chose it using an original essay, song, photo, video or work of art.

"The response from Cape Breton's youth to this campaign has been incredible," said Maurice Smith, Minister, Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "We received more than 100 submissions from students all over Cape Breton, with suggested names that truly represent the island's rich history and cultural diversity."

Selection criteria included originality, optimism and how the submissions related to the area's past, present or future. A selection committee of project and community representatives chose five finalists, which are posted on the campaign website at www.sydneyparkproject.ca.

Canadians can vote for their favourite until midnight June 3. The winning submission will be announced at an event later in June.

Sydney-area residents and visitors will have new sports fields, an outdoor stage, a playground area, dog park, skating area, trails and more when the park opens this fall. The project is on schedule to finish in March.
