Expo Helps Seniors Stay Active, Live Independently

Seniors (Oct. 2007 - Aug. 2021)

Nova Scotia seniors will find new ways to stay active, live independently and make the most of life at the 50+ Expo at Exhibition Park in Halifax.

"The 50+ Expo is a great way for seniors and their families to learn about healthy living, meet other seniors and have fun," said Denise Peterson-Rafuse, Minister of Seniors, of the two-day event that begins Friday, June 7.

Jean Legere has attended the expo for the past 15 years. She'll be there again this year, helping with the Sackville Seniors Association's booth.

"In addition to telling people about the activities at our centre, I also enjoy learning about the programs and services available to seniors," said Ms. Legere.

The expo will feature more than 90 exhibits and will highlight recreation opportunities, workshops and presentations.

"This weekend provides an opportunity to showcase all our province has to offer," said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. "Provincial experts will also be available to talk about our programs that are helping make life better and more affordable for seniors."

Premier Darrell Dexter will present the Intergenerational Awards and the Remarkable Seniors Awards on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The Intergenerational Awards recognize volunteers who inspire interaction between children, youth and older adults, and foster respect and caring across the generations.

Remarkable Seniors Awards will be presented to six Nova Scotia seniors who make their communities better through leadership, volunteer and community service work.

Award-winning Maritime singer-songwriter David Myles headlines the entertainment. Earlier this year, Mr. Myles won a Juno Award for Inner Ninja, his collaboration with Nova Scotia hip-hop artist Classified. The song is the best-selling rap single in Canadian history.

Other expo highlights include a presentation on fresh produce by Pete Luckett of Pete's Frootique, a seminar on fresh flowers by Neville MacKay of My Mother's Bloomers and a dance featuring Sugartime and Musical Friends on Friday night. "The 50+ Expo is a thrill and I look forward to it every year. I'm excited to meet seniors, share tips and ideas for healthy living and have fun with a great crowd," said Mr. Luckett. "I like to encourage seniors think outside the box when it comes to food. On Friday and Saturday, I will introduce them to some new, and some unusual, tastes and techniques for healthy living and eating."
