Bill Will Ban Importing Hydraulic Fracturing Wastewater

New legislation being tabled today, Dec. 2, will stop companies from importing or transporting wastewater from hydraulic fracturing into Nova Scotia.

"Nova Scotians are deeply concerned about the risks posed by fracking wastewater," said Environment Minister Randy Delorey. "Today we are taking another step through legislation to ensure the protection of our environment, and consequently, the health of Nova Scotians."

One Nova Scotia company has treated wastewater from New Brunswick in the past, but it has already been stopped.

The province is continuing to address wastewater from shale gas exploration in Kennetcook six years ago. Next steps on fluids in Debert and Kennetcook will be announced soon.

Nova Scotia has a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing while an independent review is being carried out by David Wheeler.
