Minister to Provide Updates on Wastewater to Communities

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Environment Minister Randy Delorey will host community meetings in Noel and Truro to provide test results from treated hydraulic fracturing wastewater in Debert and discuss cleaning up two holding ponds in Kennetcook.

"I made a commitment to these communities that I would provide an update, hear their concerns, and answer questions before we move forward with disposing of the treated hydraulic fracturing wastewater," said Mr. Delorey. "No final decisions have been made and nothing will progress until we have heard from residents."

There are about five million litres of wastewater from hydraulic fracturing in Debert, and nearly 20 million litres of wastewater, mixed with rain and melted snow, in two ponds at Kennetcook.

Most of the wastewater in Debert has been treated to remove naturally occurring radioactive materials, salt and chemicals. After the test results are released at the meetings, they will also be posted at www.novascotia.ca/nse/resources/publications.asp .

The Noel meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Branch 166 Legion, 8706 Highway 354.

The Truro meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Glengarry, 150 Willow St.
