Province Launching Segway Pilot Project

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The province has introduced a Segway pilot project to test and evaluate Segway use on streets and sidewalks.

People who own or lease at least three Segways may apply to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to participate.

"We're pleased to explore opportunities that will help to support alternative transportation options," said Geoff MacLellan, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "I can't stress enough how critical road safety will factor into the final pilot project evaluation. Safety for both the Segway user and all others on the roads, including pedestrians and cyclists, is the priority."

Potential participants must submit an application explaining how many Segways will be operated, where, and a description of the training program for Segway users. Approved applicants will receive a permit to participate in the pilot.

There will be strict rules, including using helmets and a minimum age of 16 for drivers, or 14 with a guardian's consent. Segways can not operate on roads with a speed limit higher than 60 kilometres per hour, or travel faster than 20 kilometres per hour. The province can cancel or amend the terms and conditions of the pilot permits, if needed.

Segway operators will be expected to share the road with pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. On a sidewalk, pedestrians will have the right of way. On a bike path or a road shoulder, Segway operators will behave as a cyclist.

The pilot will conclude in January 2016. Evaluations will help the department determine if amendments will be made to the Motor Vehicle Act to permanently allow Segway use in the province.

Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act made in last spring support pilot projects to test and evaluate alternative forms of transportation.
