Nova Scotians Encouraged to Vote in Hockeyville Competition

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of Nova Scotia's nominated arenas follows this release.

A dozen community arenas in Nova Scotia are vying for the 2014 Kraft Hockeyville competition, and Nova Scotians are encouraged to begin voting Saturday, March 8.

Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine said arenas promote year-round physical activity including hockey, ringette, skating, lacrosse, ball hockey and more.

"Community arenas bring people of all ages together for the love of sport, the camaraderie of the teams and the fans, and lots of fun and physical activity," said Mr. Glavine. "We hope at least one of our 12 arenas makes the first cut, and I encourage everyone to vote with pride to bring this prize home to Nova Scotia again."

The short list will be announced Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada. Then voting starts at 11 p.m. (AST) at http://krafthockeyville.cbc.ca . People 13 or older can vote as many times as they want before the deadline of 1 a.m., March 10.

"It's wonderful to see Nova Scotians rally to support their communities and get excited about a sport like hockey," said Mr. Glavine. "That community spirit can also be motivating to get out and enjoy all the benefits of a wide variety of physical activities."

The winning community gets $100,000 to upgrade its arena, a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast in the community, and an NHL pre-season game hosted at the local arena. There are also cash prizes for runners up.

Salmon River, Colchester Co., won the first Hockeyville competition in 2006.
