Minister Approves Goldboro LNG Project With Conditions

Environment Minister Randy Delorey has approved the liquefied natural gas project in Goldboro, with terms and conditions to protect Nova Scotians' health and environment.

The approval follows recommendations by the panel appointed for the class two environmental assessment, the province's most stringent environmental review process.

"I thank the panel members for their work on this project and their service to Nova Scotians," said Mr. Delorey. "Based on their report and a review by department staff, I am confident any potential environmental issues can be addressed and the economic benefits of this project can be realized."

There are 40 conditions in the approval that address wetlands, potential impacts on wildlife, and greenhouse gas emissions.

As with most industrial activities, the project will result in increased greenhouse gas emissions, but conditions require the company to work with department staff to identify opportunities to reduce emissions at every phase of the project.

Proponents must now obtain industrial approvals from the Department of Environment for various elements of the plant's operation, and must also obtain approval for the project from the Utility and Review Board.
