Spill Cleanup Continues, Talks Underway

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Pumper trucks continued to vacuum the effluent spilled from a broken pipe at Northern Pulp in Pictou County, today, June 13.

Department of Environment inspectors, who have been on site since Tuesday morning, said samples have been collected to be analysed for pollutants including dioxins and furans, acute toxicity and chronic toxicity.

The spill appears to have caused the most damage to the wetlands and the pumpers were still vacuuming up that area today. Samples collected by Strum Environmental have been sent to a Montreal lab and the results should be back to the department next week.

The department continues to monitor the site.

Environment Minister Randy Delorey held several discussions today with Pictou Landing First Nations and Northern Pulp. The talks are ongoing.
