Recreation Facility Funding for South Shore

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of grants in the South Shore region announced by Suzanne Lohnes-Croft follows this release.

Upgrading a skateboard park in Lunenburg is one of eight projects on the South Shore announced today, July 7, by Lunenburg MLA Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine.

The projects will receive grants totaling $151,500 through the Recreation Facility Development Program, to help Nova Scotians lead healthy, active lifestyles. Two other projects on the South Shore receiving grants totaling $102,000, were also announced today.

"We need good quality sport and recreation facilities where Nova Scotians can enjoy physical activity as part of a healthy active lifestyle," said Ms. Lohnes-Croft. "With nearly $2 million for 67 projects across the province, Nova Scotians of all ages can get active and have fun using new and upgraded facilities like this skateboard park."

The Town of Lunenburg is getting $16,000 to upgrade the skate park.

"This space has been well used for many years and offers another option for our young people to stay active and be well," said Lunenburg Mayor Rachel Bailey. "Getting new ramps to replace those lost to age and many years of service will be a welcome improvement to the recreation amenities in our area."

Other projects in the region include $21,600 to upgrade tennis courts in Chester and $13,000 to make the Union Square Community Hall in Lunenburg County wheelchair accessible.

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.

The grants support Thrive!, the province's plan for a healthier Nova Scotia. The plan aims to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Learn more at http://thrive.novascotia.ca .
