Community Park One of Recreation Facility Funding Grants in Central Region

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of grants in the Central region announced today in Halifax follows this release.

Building a community park where children and families can be active and play is one of eight projects in the Central region announced today, July 10, by Fairview-Clayton Park MLA Patricia Arab, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine.

The projects will receive grants totaling $221,000 through the Recreation Facility Development Program to help Nova Scotians lead healthy, active lifestyles. Eleven other projects in the region, receiving grants totaling $411,000, were also announced today.

"Nova Scotians need to be active to be healthy, so we're investing in sport and recreation facilities where people can enjoy physical activity," said Ms. Arab. "With nearly $2 million for 67 projects across the province, Nova Scotians of all ages can get active and have fun using new and upgraded facilities like this community park."

The Mount Royale Neighbourhood Association is getting $80,000 to build the park.

"I am pleased with this contribution of funds which, together with the funding from the Halifax Regional Municipality, will help us to break ground on a park that will be a valuable asset and gathering space for this community now and for future generations," said Reg Rankin, councillor for District 12 Timberlea-Beechville-Clayton Park West. "I commend the many residents in this area who worked with city staff to develop a vision for this site."

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.

The grants support Thrive!, the province's plan for a healthier Nova Scotia. The plan aims to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Learn more at http://thrive.novascotia.ca .
