MSI Coverage Extended for Out of Province Travel

Health and Wellness

If you're planning an extended trip to a warmer climate, or to visit the grandkids over Christmas, the province has good news for you.

Starting Aug. 1, Nova Scotians will be able to stay out of the province for a total of seven months per calendar year without losing health coverage under MSI.

Travellers who rely on the Seniors or Family Pharmacare programs will also be able to get up to three 90-day refills of their medications before they leave.

Vacationers must let MSI know about their absence in advance to ensure they are covered. They can do so by calling toll-free 1-800-563-8880.

"Many Nova Scotians like to trade snowbanks for sunshine during the winter months, but they don't want to lose their health coverage," said Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. "Now they'll be able to travel, knowing their medical coverage will remain intact."

Previously, vacationers had to return home after six months and could only receive up to 180 days' worth of medications in advance under provincial Pharmacare programs.

About 900 Nova Scotians register temporary absences with MSI each year.
