LUNENBURG COUNTY: Tancook Island ferry service

The Tancook Island ferry, the William Ernst, is out of service for engine repairs.

Recognizing the inconvenience to residents, a replacement charter ferry, the Eastern Points, is now in place so service can continue. Marine services staff is also working with the captain to enclose the vessel from the elements.

With respect to concerns related to the upcoming fishing season, the Eastern Points can also transport goods and supplies to the islands, including heating fuel; up to 100 litres of gasoline per voyage and as much diesel as can be carried on board in approved containers.

The capacity of the Eastern Points is 43 passengers per voyage. At this time of year, the average is 25 passengers per voyage.

The length of time that the William Ernst will be out of service depends on the nature of repairs and parts availability. Staff estimates it could be two to three weeks. The charter ferry will remain in place until the regular ferry can return to service.
