Northern Pulp Stack Test Results Posted

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

The Department of Environment today, Nov. 28, posted stack test results from the Northern Pulp mill in Pictou County.

Testing was completed Oct. 24, by Stantec Consulting Ltd. The department reviewed the results and they show an improvement over benchmark measurements taken in August. The tests are a requirement of the ministerial control order issued to the company by Environment Minister Randy Delorey in August.

Particulate emissions from the power boiler are now below the regulatory limit, indicating that work completed during the September maintenance shutdown successfully addressed the problem.

While emission levels on the recovery boiler are much improved, they are still slightly above limits allowed under the company's industrial approval.

The company is on schedule to replace the precipitator, which should reduce emissions to within limits. As part of the ministerial order, the precipitator must be constructed, installed, commissioned and operational by May 30.
