Minister Issues New Order to Northern Pulp

Government issued a new ministerial order to Northern Pulp in Pictou Co., today, May 28, to ensure operations at the mill do not resume until installation of the precipitator is complete.

The order, signed by acting Environment Minister Mark Furey, replaces the order issued last August, which required the company to have a precipitator constructed, installed, commissioned and operational by May 30. The new precipitator is expected to reduce emissions at the mill to within limits.

Earlier this month, the department received notice that the company plans to suspend operations May 30 in order to complete the installation.
