Recreation Facility Funding for Cape Breton

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of grants in Cape Breton announced today follows this release.

Upgrades to the Northside Community Pool in Sydney Mines is one of five projects in Cape Breton announced today, June 25, to support fun and physical activity for Nova Scotians.

The projects will receive grants totalling $144,000 through the Recreation Facility Development Program. Grants for six other projects receiving $135,000 will be announced at a later date, bringing the Cape Breton total to $279,000.

"Sport and recreation facilities like the Northside Community Pool are important for Nova Scotians to lead healthy lifestyles," said Victoria-The Lakes MLA Pam Eyking, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. "We're investing nearly $1.7 million for 65 new and upgraded facilities around the province to help people make physical activity a part of their daily lives."

The Northside Community Pool will use $62,000 to replace skimmers and piping.

"Our facility has an excellent reputation for providing aquatic recreation opportunities in this community," said Jeff MacNeil, board member, Northside Community Pool. "This grant helps assure that residents of the Northside will continue to have a top-notch place to swim for many years to come."

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.

The grants support Thrive!, government's plan for a healthier Nova Scotia. The plan aims to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Learn more at http://thrive.novascotia.ca .
