Government Offers New Camping Incentives to Provincial Parks

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

More than 9,000 Grade 4 students in the province will get two free nights in one of Nova Scotia's 20 provincial camping parks this summer.

The Grade 4s Outdoors program launched today, May 19, at Laurie Provincial Park, invites students and their families to enjoy the camping and provides a provincial park passport to encourage exploration of any park.

"We believe that offering an affordable camping experience to Grade 4s today will help generate new provincial park users for the future, including new Canadians," said Natural Resources Minister Lloyd Hines. "This is an exciting and innovative way to expose young people to the benefits of camping in our provincial parks - physically, emotionally and spiritually."

In June, every Grade 4 student in the province will get a package containing a provincial parks passport and a campsite coupon for two free nights in any of Nova Scotia's 20 provincial camping parks. The colourful passport encourages kids to explore the park by checking off items and activities they experience while camping with their friends or families. The materials will be available in English and French.

"Young students are getting the opportunity to learn and build skills through real time exploration and outdoor experiences in a natural environment," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. "This program will not only pique their natural curiosity about nature but it will help to promote healthier lifestyles through fun, outdoor activities."

Government is also partnering with Scouts Canada to offer the Learn2Camp program this summer as another way to encourage camping. People who apply will learn essentials such as how to build a fire, cook a meal, set up a tent, and choose camping equipment. The weekend program at Blomidon Provincial Park, July 9 and 10, will include a night of camping.

Mr. Hines said government also wanted to honour veterans by offering discounted campsite fees at all provincial parks. Anyone who has spent at least three years serving the military for Canada, or any country allied with Canada, will pay a reduced fee whenever they book a provincial park campsite with proof of veteran status. "We want to thank our veterans and also encourage Nova Scotians to enjoy the natural beauty of our province," said Mr. Hines.
