New Waterford is getting a new community health centre.

Premier Stephen McNeil announced today, April 5, the project is moving ahead with site selection and design.

“Our government is committed to improving access to health care across this province, to ensure more Nova Scotians can access the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Premier McNeil. “This investment is an important first step in making sure residents have a place to go, with quality care under one roof right here in New Waterford.”

The selection team will look at options to renovate an existing space or build a new one.

“We are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with our health-care team and community stakeholders to help identify New Waterford's current and future health-care needs, including primary care and the role of community-based teams in supporting a healthier community,” said Lindsay Peach, vice president, integrated health services community support and management, Nova Scotia Health Authority. “The next phase of this project will be an opportunity for us to build on the commitment of the people in New Waterford to improve the health status and well-being of their community.”

The concept for the new health centre is for an existing collaborative care practice to move into the new space, along with other services such as mental health and addictions and public health services.

“Our community is getting older, and our health needs are changing. There is no better time to see so many health services come together under one roof,” said Sister Margie Gillis, chair, New Waterford community health centre board. “We are thrilled to see this project begin in New Waterford.”

Once the design phase is complete, construction is expected to start in 2018.
