Athletes Bring Home 15 Medals After First Week at Canada Games

Team Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia painted the first week of the 2017 Canada Games silver and bronze with some gold highlights.

The province’s athletes picked up medals on the water, on the beach, in the hills, on the pitch and on the track.

Gold medal winners were Cameron Shaw of Halifax and Justin Timmins of Bedford in men’s double-handed 29er sailing and Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn in shot put.

Ben Brown of Cambridge took home the most medals, with three silvers in wheelchair racing at distances of 200 metres, 400 metres and 1,500 metres.

By the end of the first week of competition in Winnipeg Team Nova Scotia had 15 medals: two gold, seven silver and six bronze. That is two medals better than the team’s showing in the first week of the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke.

“I am very proud, as can all Nova Scotians be, of the effort these young athletes put into representing their province during a very competitive first week,” said Chef de Mission Stephen Gallant. “I know that Week 2 athletes can’t wait to get to Winnipeg to do the same.”

Other medal-winning finishes of Week 1 were:

  • Lauren Sullivan, Halifax, silver in single-handed laser radial
  • Kobe Shannon and Christian Fricke, both of Halifax, silver in men’s beach volleyball
  • Mackenzie Myatt, Musquodoboit Harbour, silver in women’s mountain bike sprint
  • Ryan Shay, Yarmouth, silver in para discus
  • Donald Peters, Dartmouth, two bronze in men’s Special Olympic 100 and 200-metres sprints
  • Siobhan MacDonald, Mabou, the Week 1 flag-bearer, bronze in 2.4-metre para mix
  • Casey Perrin, Halifax, bronze in para shot put
  • Joy MacLachlan, Halifax, bronze in 100-metre Special Olympic sprint
  • women’s soccer, bronze.

Week 2 athletes arrive today, Aug. 5. Their sports are indoor volleyball, wrestling, tennis, swimming, women’s softball, men’s soccer, golf, road cycling and canoe/kayak. Week 2 athletes will also participate in the closing ceremonies, Aug. 13, with paddler Zane Clarke, a multiple national gold-medal winner, as the team’s flag-bearer.
