Free Fishing During February Long Weekend

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Anglers across Nova Scotia are encouraged to enjoy a free winter fishing weekend in February.

Nova Scotia Heritage Day makes this a chance to enjoy fishing over a long weekend from Saturday, Feb. 17 through Monday, Feb. 19.

“You can introduce family, friends and visitors to this sport during the annual free winter fishing weekend,” said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell. “But, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, please put safety first.”

A list of open lakes showing about 60 locations across the province as well as fish species and catch limits is available online at: https://novascotia.ca/fish/sportfishing/laws-regs/docs/winter-fishing-opportunities.pdf.

Lakes open for winter offer a chance to fish for trout, perch and chain pickerel.

During the regular winter season, sportfishing requires a fishing licence that can be purchased at Department of Natural Resources offices. Sportfishing generates more than $56 million in revenue for communities around the province.

The Nova Scotia Anglers’ Handbook includes a summary of regulations and is available online at:
