QEII Redevelopment Project Reaches First Milestone

Surgeries are now being performed at a new operating room at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor. There will be 800 more operations each year, doubling the number of its annual procedures.

“The completion of the operating room is a significant milestone in the QEII redevelopment project,” said Minister of Health and Wellness Randy Delorey. “This project allows us to move services out of the aging Victoria and Centennial buildings at the VG site, while also improving access and co-ordinating care for all Nova Scotians.”

The existing operating room has also been upgraded and modernized, and will open in two weeks. This will be the first time in about 30 years that Hants Community Hospital has had two operating rooms up and running.

Mr. Delorey and Sherri Parker, health services director at Hants Community Hospital, officially opened the new operating room today, Feb. 14.

“We are proud of our hospital and the important role we play in the community and as part of the provincial health system,” said Ms. Parker. “With the addition of this new operating room even more Nova Scotians will be able to experience the excellent care delivered by the staff, physicians and volunteers.”

Surgeries performed at the hospital are routine day surgeries such as hernia repairs and minor orthopedic procedures such as shoulder and knee scopes.

“The operating rooms are a critical part of our surgical system, ensuring same day surgical procedures can be completed efficiently,” said Dr. Alex Mitchell, chief of surgery at Dartmouth General and Hants Community hospitals. “With this renovation, Hants will become an integral player in the redevelopment of the QEII, allowing for creative solutions to the challenges faced by health care.”

“This is much more convenient,” said Dwight Gould, a St. Croix resident whose upcoming surgery will be performed at the Hants Community Hospital. “I don’t have to worry about arranging a ride with family to and from the city. This hospital is 10 minutes away. We’re so fortunate to have this hospital in our community.”

Along with the renovations at the Hants Community Hospital, the QEII redevelopment project includes the expansion and renovations at the Dartmouth General Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary that will support the eventual closure of the Centennial and Victoria buildings in Halifax.
