Five Nova Scotia companies and one from Ontario have been awarded the latest contracts for the expansion and renovation of the Dartmouth General Hospital, as part of the QEII redevelopment project.

Government awarded six of the 17 contracts for the third construction services tender today, March 26.

The companies are:

  • Atlantica Mechanical, Dartmouth
  • Bond and Coolen Contracting Ltd., Dartmouth
  • Life Safety Systems, Dartmouth
  • RKO Steel Ltd., Dartmouth
  • Southeast Drywall Ltd., Dartmouth
  • Inflector Environmental Services, Greely, Ontario

These contracts are for the construction of the interior of the new addition and renovations within the existing hospital. Work includes mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, structural steel, drywalling, demolition and hazardous materials removal.

The total cost of these tenders is more than $44.3 million. The remaining 11 contracts for these services will be awarded over the next few weeks.

The expansion and renovations will result in the addition of 48 beds on the fifth floor, as well as eight new operating rooms to replace four existing operating rooms. The work also includes extensive upgrades to the entrance, outpatient and diagnostic imaging areas.

The QEII redevelopment project also includes the expansion and renovations at the Halifax Infirmary site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre, new and renovated operating rooms at Hants Community Hospital in Windsor and the construction of a new community outpatient centre in Bayers Lake. This work will allow services to be moved out of the Centennial and Victoria buildings on the Victoria General site, to prepare for their eventual closure.
