Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation

Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (to Dec. 2012)

The Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation has agreed to fund its first project, aimed at helping problem gamers and their families.

"Nova Scotians want to see gaming managed with care and diligence. We take that very seriously," said Dara Gordon, vice-chair of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation.

The foundation, formerly known as the VLT Problem Gaming Fund, provides financial support for programs or projects in problem gaming research, prevention and education. Money is contributed by provincial VLT operators with matching contributions from the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. The fund now stands at approximately $2 million.

The first project to be funded is a unique outreach centre run by the Compulsive and Problem Gamblers Society. The outreach centre, located on 2756 Gladstone St. in Halifax, offers problem gamers a place to drop in and talk through their problems. It also provides information, education and counselling. The centre will receive approximately $275,000 from the foundation.

Funding from the foundation will supplement the $1 million contributed from casino revenues and spent by government on problem gaming each year. Nova Scotia has implemented Canada's first 24-hour toll-free hotline, one-on-one counselling, education in schools, and grants for community projects. These programs are coordinated by the Department of Health's problem gambling division.

The Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation is administered under the authority of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. "We are committed to socially responsible gaming and initiatives for people and families who need help," said Ms. Gordon. "We currently have a number of applications under consideration, and I encourage others to submit proposals."

Information on application procedures and criteria are available from the Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation at P.O. Box 1501, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 2Y3, phone: 902-424-2203.
