Parks Day Celebrations

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Parks Day 1998 will be celebrated on Saturday, July 18 at several provincial parks across Nova Scotia. Whether participating in a hike or joining in planned activities, there is something for the whole family.

"Parks Day is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate and enjoy the beautiful parks located throughout the province," said Natural Resources Minister Kennie MacAskill. "They are nature's resorts and I encourage all Nova Scotians to use and enjoy them often."

There are over 120 parks in the provincial system, ranging from small roadside picnic sites to large campgrounds and beaches.

For many years the third Saturday in July has been set aside to celebrate Parks Day in national, provincial, territorial and municipal parks across Canada.

Highlighting this year's Parks Day is the 25th anniversary of Blomidon provincial park in Kings County. Beginning at 10 a.m. there will be a hike and a kite making workshop at the park, followed by cake and refreshments.

A number of special events are planned for Parks Day through the Parks are for People and Take A Hike programs:

  • Annapolis County: nature walk along the trails at Upper Clements wildlife park.

  • Cumberland County: Seagull Pewter triathlon at Gulf Shore provincial park.

  • Guysborough County: hoedown on the hill and fireworks at Boylston provincial park.

  • Halifax County: all day outdoor recreation festival and orienteering at Dollar Lake provincial park.

  • Inverness County: hike at Whycocomagh provincial park.

  • Lunenburg County: walk along the saltmarsh at Rissers Beach provincial park.

  • Richmond County: cultural day of festivities at Battery provincial park.

  • Yarmouth County: walk at Chebogue Meadows.

The Parks are for People program involves over 40 community groups and organizations sponsoring 114 events throughout the park season, said Mr. MacAskill. This is the program's 10th anniversary, with seven organizations having participated every year since it began.
