Interment Site Chosen

Flight 111 Secretariat

Bayswater has been chosen as the interment site for those who died in the crash of Swissair Flight 111.

Lorne Clarke, chair of the Flight 111 Memorial Advisory Committee, said the Bayswater location was chosen after taking a number of factors into consideration, including the geography and geology of the site, the wishes of the St. Margarets Bay area residents, and the wishes of the victims' families.

"This is a very sensitive issue for many people," said Mr. Clarke. "We've sent a letter to the families and to area residents to indicate that burial will take place in Bayswater, and the response we've received has been positive."

The interment location is at the Bayswater memorial site, announced last month by Premier Russell MacLellan. The memorial advisory committee is working with a short list of design and construction proposals for the memorials. The committee will make its decision at the end of the month.

Interment and memorial dedications will occur between Sept. 1-3, when many of the family members will be in Nova Scotia. Final details surrounding their visit have not yet been determined.
