Stellarton High Grad Prepares For Future

Education and Culture (to July 1999)

A Stellarton High School student is preparing for his future by excelling in the present.

Andrew Francis, a Grade 12 student, is a winner of the Donald Sobey Atlantic Leadership Scholarship Fund, which is awarded for academic excellence and extra-curricular leadership skills. He plans to attend Queen's University in the fall, and wants to obtain a bachelor of commerce degree.

Glancing at his credentials, Mr. Francis earned his scholarship. He served as student council president and sat on the school advisory council, as well as the dance and winter carnival committees, to name only a few. He also played on the school soccer, softball and hockey teams.

"Andrew is a natural born leader. He has a great attitude, a wonderful disposition and gives 100 per cent in everything he does," says Jeff Green, co-ordinator of student services at Stellarton High School. "As student council president, he expanded the council to involve the head of all student committees. This has increased the numbers at meetings and has given the students more say in their school's activities. This is just one way that he has made a difference at the school."

His school involvement earned Mr. Francis a Student Life Award, presented to a person who contributes to everyday life at his high school. He has also been awarded the Dr. John F. Hamm Shield for student council leadership.

His athletics role earned him the Coach's Award for high school soccer. "He exudes energy and enthusiasm. When Andrew is on the ice ,it brings out the best in his teammates," says Mr. Green, who coached Mr. Francis in hockey.

Outside of school, Mr. Francis volunteers with the Nova Scotia Alzheimer's Society, takes part in the Student's Helping Others Program, referees minor hockey and participates with the Northern Nova Soccer Club.

His high academic standing and leadership skills earned him another scholarship, from the Pictou County High School Hockey League.

Mr. Francis is looking past his undergraduate degree, and far into the future.

"I'm looking forward to going to Queens and getting my degree, but I'm not going to stop there. Eventually, I would like to go to law school, become a lawyer, then a judge, and maybe begin a career in politics."
