Bridgetown Grads Reflect on School Ties

Education and Culture (to July 1999)

Two Bridgetown Regional High School students have more in common than their Alma Mater.

Beth McCurdy and Amanda Steadman have been classmates for the past six years. They are honours students, university scholarship winners and plan to attend Mount Allison University in the fall.

But more than academics tie these two together. The two women also served as school representatives at the Terry Fox Youth Centre in Ottawa.

They are successful in other fields, as well.

Ms. McCurdy performed in the senior concert jazz band and organized the student choir. She wrote, produced and performed a one-woman show, and she won a University of Toronto Book Prize for creativity and achievement.

Besides her artistic interest, Ms. McCurdy was involved in track and field, worked in the school cafeteria, belonged to grad committees and served as a peer mediator.

"I think Beth is a very creative person," says Ms. Steadman about her classmate. "She balances a very busy life and of all the work she does, the outcome of her efforts is exceptional."

Ms. Steadman leads an equally active life. She lends a hand to worthy causes. Last year, she organized a Christmas toy drive and helps cater community suppers when the firefighters' ladies auxiliary needs assistance.

In school, Ms. Steadman was secretary of the Grade 12 committee and a member of the basketball, table tennis, volleyball, track and field and soccer teams. She is also a member of the Lawrencetown swim team. Her athletic abilities pushed her to a provincial title in table tennis, and she helped lead the way for the basketball team to win the provincials.

"Amanda's ability to handle such a hectic life is truly an amazing characteristic," says Ms. McCurdy. "She's a top athlete, a great person and an inspiration."

School principal Allen Hume says this duo is a tribute to their school and community. "Beth and Amanda are role models in the school. They both put 100 per cent into everything they do, and there is no doubt they will excel in their future careers," says Mr. Hume.
