New Department Hits the Ground Running

Tourism and Culture (Aug. 1999 - Dec. 2003)

The newly created Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture began operations today with the appointment of a new acting deputy minister.

Howard Windsor moves into the position from his deputy minister post at the Department Housing and Municipal Affairs. Brian Stonehouse, executive director of Housing Services Division, moves into Mr. Windsor's former position.

Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture, said he looks forward to working with Mr. Windsor and others within the department.

"Tourism and culture are not only big economic contributors to this province, they are also a strong part of who we are as Nova Scotians," said Mr. MacDonald. "Our department's goal is to work with all sectors of the industry to help it grow to its potential."

Mr. MacDonald said the department plans to do a number of things in its first mandate.

First, the department will work with the Nova Scotia Tourism Partnership Council to ensure key participants in the tourism sector are included.

Second, the department wants to develop, in partnership with the tourism sector, themes and programs for marketing Nova Scotia as a year-round tourist destination.

Third, the department wants to work with the tourism sector to establish realistic criteria for determining the true value of tourism in Nova Scotia.

The new department's responsibilities also include promoting the province's museums, parks and historical buildings.

"Our province has so much to offer visitors, not only in scenic beauty, but also in culture and hospitality," said Mr. MacDonald. "The best way to foster development in this industry is to work with the people who are part of it."
