New Date Set for Implementation of Regulations

Labour (to Sept. 2000)

Labour Minister Ron Russell has announced a new implementation date for the Occupational Safety General Regulations. Originally scheduled to come into effect on Oct. 1, 1999, cabinet has now agreed to extend the date to March 31, 2000.

"We felt the additional time was required as we strive to develop the safest workplaces in the nation," Mr. Russell said. "This is a very complex and detailed exercise and it is imperative that we allow the time to have it done right."

The labour minister said that while some may feel the delay is a step backwards it is quite the opposite. He believes that by allowing additional time for the development of the Occupational Safety General Regulations, government is demonstrating its commitment to protecting workers from workplace injury.

"We have had a very short time to review the progress of these regulations and, quite frankly, I wasn't completely satisfied with what I was reading and felt that in the best interest of all the stakeholders more time was required," Mr. Russell said. "Sixty-two revisions have been recommended by the stakeholders and will be incorporated in the final regulations."

This extension will also ensure that the 112 submissions, and the changes identified by the stakeholders during an extensive consultation process, will be reviewed and considered.
