Businesses Reminded of Remembrance Day Act

Labour (to Sept. 2000)

Labour Minister Ron Russell today reminded Nova Scotia businesses and industry of An Act Respecting the Observance of Remembrance Day. The act makes it clear which businesses can and cannot open on Nov. 11.

"Nova Scotians have always demonstrated a strong respect for the sacrifices of veterans of the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War," Mr. Russell said. "It is important for government to work hard to protect the intent of this very special day."

The act was passed in 1981 to ensure Nova Scotians continue to pay tribute to those who died, to cherish those who have suffered grievous injury and to dedicate themselves anew to maintaining and furthering the ideals hallowed by those sacrifices.

"Business and industry leaders who do not fully understand the act, and the intent of the legislation, should contact the Department of Labour for clarification," said Mr. Russell. "This especially applies to the younger individuals taking over the reigns of business, who may not be aware of this act."
