Mediator Appointed in Rodd Grand Hotel Dispute

Labour (to Sept. 2000)

Labour Minister Angus MacIsaac has appointed former chief justice Lorne Clarke to act as the mediator in a long-standing labour dispute in Yarmouth.

The dispute involves the Rodd Grand Hotel and striking workers, who are now members of the Canadian Auto Workers union.

"Mr. Clarke has been very successful in bringing about positive resolution in recent mediation duties," Mr. MacIsaac said. "I am very pleased that someone of Mr. Clarke's stature would, once again, agree to serve his province."

Mr. MacIsaac said that while the current dispute has been difficult for all concerned, it was important to allow the various stages of the collective bargaining process to work. He is confident that this has occurred.

"We have been monitoring this dispute very closely and felt the time had come to institute this, a normal dispute-breaking mechanism of the collective agreement process," Mr. MacIsaac said.
