Mediator Appointed in UCCB Dispute

Labour (to Sept. 2000)

Labour Minister Angus MacIsaac today appointed Pictou County lawyer Milton Veniot to mediate the current labour-management dispute at the University College of Cape Breton, in Sydney.

Members of the Faculty Association of University Teachers at UCCB went on strike on Feb. 11, 2000.

"Mr. Veniot has been very successful in bringing about positive settlements in previous mediation duties," Mr. MacIsaac said. "He is recognized as a noted and successful arbitrator, and is known for his fairness."

Recently, Mr. Veniot has served as the mediator for successful conclusions at The Cove Guest Home, Braemare Adult Residential Centre, Ocean View Manor and Breton Bay Nursing Home.

Mr. MacIsaac said that while the current dispute has been difficult for all parties, it is important to exercise patience and allow the collective bargaining process to work.

"We have been watching this dispute very closely," Mr. MacIsaac said. "When the employees exercised their right to strike, we have worked with both employees and management in their efforts to reach an agreement."

He said that the appointment of a mediator is a normal dispute-breaking mechanism and is part of the collective bargaining process.
