NATURAL RESOURCES--Minister Advocates Energy Efficiency in Home Building

Nova Scotia is a leader in providing quality, energy-efficient homes and renovations, Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage said in an address to the ENERhouse 2001 conference in Dartmouth this afternoon.

Nova Scotia is one of the top three provinces for R-2000 home construction, with more than 1,000 certified homes, 64 of which were built last year alone. The R-2000 program focuses on meeting specific standards for air quality and energy efficiency in home construction.

"Energy efficiency makes sense from an economic and an environmental standpoint," said the minister. "It is good for business, consumers and our province's long-term environmental health."

Mr. Fage urged continued participation from home builders in achieving more efficient energy use.

"I encourage the home construction industry to continue its efforts in support of a more sustainable energy future," he said. "We must work together to change the way we value energy and how we use it. We must use energy more efficiently, focusing on conservation and renewable energy sources."

The ENERhouse 2001 conference brings together professionals in Atlantic Canada's residential-construction industry. Organized by the Nova Scotia Home Builders' Association, this year's conference will highlight such energy-related topics as home ventilation, preparing homes to receive natural gas, energy efficiency and heating-system performance, and home-heating options.

The Department of Natural Resources launched the ENERhouse conference in 1991 with a goal of sharing ideas and assisting Nova Scotians in becoming more energy efficient.
