?SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Don't Let Heat Go Through the Roof

Out of sight usually means out of mind. It would be a mistake, though, to overlook your attic when it comes to finding ways to reduce your heating expenses.

Most of us have unfinished attics and either a hatch or a doorway leading to the space. Few of us think of attics as outdoor space, but that's just what they are. A properly insulated attic gets very cold when the outside temperature is low.

Peter Geddes, an energy efficiency expert with the Clean Nova Scotia Foundation, recommends treating the ceiling between the living space and the attic as you would an outside wall.

"Make sure you have enough insulation to keep the heat in and be sure the door or hatch is properly sealed," said Mr. Geddes. "Having good attic ventilation doesn't mean your warm indoor air won't go through the roof."
