Parks Day Events to be Held Across Province

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

On Saturday, July 21, the 12th annual Parks Day will be celebrated throughout Nova Scotia.

Whether it is hiking, camping, bird watching or just joining in on planned activities, there will be something for everyone at many of Nova Scotia's provincial parks.

"Taking part in Parks Day is a wonderful opportunity to experience everything our provincial parks have to offer," said Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage. "A number of activities are planned throughout the province and I encourage residents and visitors to come out and join in the fun."

The third Saturday in July has been set aside for many years as Parks Day in national, provincial, territorial and municipal parks across the country. The focus of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting these very special areas, while at the same time encouraging active living.

There are more than 120 parks in the provincial system. They range from small daytime picnic sites to campgrounds and beaches. Events for Parks Day are planned for those parks that participate in the Parks are for People and Take a Hike programs. They include:

  • Halifax County: orienteering, canoeing, a community access program and a game of wildlife I spy at Dollar Lake Provincial Park;

  • Halifax County: a 24-kilometre Nova Scotia Trans-Canada Trail bike ride through the Cole Harbour-Lawrencetown Coastal Heritage Park System;

  • Yarmouth County: a nature walk at Chebogue Meadow Provincial Park;

  • Kings County: kite-making at Blomidon Provincial Park;

  • Queens County: wildlife photography and a picnic at Thomas Raddall Provincial Park;

  • Lunenburg County: sand castle competition at Rissers Beach Provincial Park.

  • Supervised Provincial Beach Parks: Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service -- Drowning Prevention Day at Rainbow Haven, Lawrencetown, Dollar Lake, Clam Harbour, Queensland, Rissers, Ellenwood Lake, Heather, Melmerby, and Dominion provincial beach parks.
