SERVICE NOVA SCOTIA/MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--New Minas Receives Funding for Water Well Protection

Residents in New Minas, Kings Co. will soon see improvements in their water system with a well protection project funded through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint funding, in the amount of $283,300, was announced today as one of 22 project approvals totalling more than $21.8 million, by Robert G. Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and David Morse, Minister of Environment and Labour, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"We've signed on to the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program with the intention of helping Nova Scotians meet important goals

  • safe drinking water, a healthy environment and an opportunity to prosper here at home," said Mr. Morse.

Green municipal infrastructure that ensures effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in Year One will be directed to green projects, like the storm sewer and water project in New Minas.

"The Government of Canada is committed to projects that improve our quality of life," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we're investing in 'green' projects that will provide higher quality drinking water and a cleaner environment."

The $425,000 project will provide for well protection for the village of New Minas. A storm sewer and sidewalks will be installed on Milne Avenue as part of the project. The town will have higher quality potable water which will require less chemicals to treat. The storm water system will address flooding problems in the area. The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Village of New Minas, which will fund the balance of the project costs.

"We're delighted that our municipality has been able to work with the federal and provincial governments to make New Minas a better place to live, work and visit," said Ted Nicholson, Chair of the Village Commission of New Minas.

This is the first in a series of approval announcements for projects nominated by municipalities under the program. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the Program's management committee.
