SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Canning to Start Water Well Improvements

Existing water wells in the Village of Canning will be refurbished, and a new test drilling program will be initiated due to project funding through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding, in the amount of $37,332 was announced today as one of 14 project approvals totalling more than $14.1 million. The announcement was made by Mark Parent, MLA for Kings North, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, and Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

"This project is an investment in the on-going prosperity of Canning and its ability to grow in the future," said Mr. Parent.

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in year one will be directed to green projects, like the well water improvements in Canning.

"The government of Canada is making infrastructure a top priority in our communities," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are investing in green projects that will improve our quality of life through safe drinking water and a cleaner environment."

The $56,000 Canning project will focus on two aspects of the village's well water system. Increasing demands on the existing system have prompted the initiation of a test drilling program to identify new well locations. In addition, the existing system will be refurbished. Together, the two-pronged project will help increase the volume and quality of potable water to the community.

"We're very pleased to see this project come to fruition," said Fred Stockall, chair of the Village Commission. "It's great to see the growth of the village being met by some timely and appropriate infrastructure solutions."

The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Village of Canning, which will fund the balance of the project.

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program totalling more than $39 million to date. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
