Parks Remain Open, Fire Ban Still in Effect

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage wants to assure Nova Scotia visitors and residents that provincially operated parks are still open for business.

"While we are keeping the fire ban and woods travel ban in place throughout the province, our parks are still open to visitors," said Mr. Fage. "Nova Scotia's provincial parks have a lot to offer in terms of organized programs and camping is still an option."

Parks Are for People events are scheduled for many parks throughout the province. For example, on Saturday, Aug. 18, Smileys Park in Hants Co. will be hosting the Royal Astronomical Society for astronomy demonstrations and evening public sky observing. These events begin at 9:30 a.m.

In addition, Clam Harbour Beach Provincial Park in Halifax Co. is holding its annual sand castle and sculpture contest, beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19. This is a popular event for people of all ages where contestants are judged on originality, design and detail. Also taking place on Sunday is the YMCA Annual Triathlon at Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park, Yarmouth Co., beginning at 8:30 a.m.

"As well as the many events that are planned, we also want to let everyone know that the parks are still open for camping, however, camp fires are banned and travel into the woods may be restricted in some parks," said the minister.

The ban on open fires was announced on July 27 and will remain in effect until further notice.

Reservations can be made at all parks by directly calling the provincial park of your choice. For more information on specific parks, please contact your local department of Natural Resources office, or visit the Web site at parks.gov.ns.ca .
