Independent Risk Assessment Necessary for Wild Turkeys

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Ernest Fage, Minister of Natural Resources, said more information is required to determine whether wild turkeys should be introduced in Nova Scotia.

"Introducing a new wildlife species is a complicated and important decision to make," said Mr. Fage. "Numerous concerns were raised concerning the ecological risks as well as disease risks to agricultural species and the potential of losses in agricultural crops."

The department received 161 responses to its request for public input on the issue. Although the majority were in favour of the introduction, there were a number of significant concerns raised by those opposed.

Due to the differences in opinion shared by the general public and various government departments, the minister is calling for a comprehensive independent assessment to address the ecological, disease and nuisance risks of the introduction. Once this information is available, the department will be able to make a final decision.

Results of the public consultation are available for review on the Department of Natural Resources Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/ .
